I interviewed Somchai (not his real name), a 38-year-old Thai immigrant who moved to Finland five years ago for better job opportunities in the restaurant industry. He explained that adapting to the Finnish way of life was not easy, especially because of the language barrier and the cold climate. While many Finns speak English, he found that learning Finnish was essential for work and everyday life.

Socially, Somchai noticed that Finnish people are more reserved compared to Thailand, where conversations and friendships come more naturally. Making Finnish friends took time, but he eventually built a support network through work and local Thai communities. He also appreciates Finland’s safety, fair working conditions, and public services.

When asked if he feels at home in Finland, Somchai said he is getting there. He still misses Thailand’s warm weather and lively atmosphere but feels more settled as he improves his language skills and builds stronger connections. His experience highlights the challenges and rewards of integrating into a new culture.
