What did your interviewee tell about integrating into Finnish society?
Integrating into Finnish society has been a journey of learning and adjustment for me. One of the biggest challenges has been understanding the Finnish language. While there are courses available, becoming fluent enough to communicate confidently has taken time. On the positive side, Finnish society offers a lot of support for integration, such as language classes and assistance programs. People here respect my willingness to learn and adapt, which has motivated me to keep trying.
What has been difficult for them, and what has been easy?
The most difficult part has been making social connections. Finns are polite but reserved, so forming friendships outside of structured environments like work or school has been challenging. Another difficulty has been the long, dark winters, which were very different from what I was used to in Afghanistan.
On the other hand, the ease and efficiency of public services in Finland have been a relief. Everything from healthcare to transportation is well-organized, and once I understood how to navigate the system, life became much smoother. Also, the safety and stability of the country have been comforting compared to the turmoil I left behind.
Do they feel at home in Finland?
Over time, I have started to feel more at home in Finland. It’s not the same as being back in Afghanistan, where the culture and community are familiar, but Finland offers a sense of security and opportunity that I deeply appreciate. My children, who attend school here, feel very much at home, which helps me feel more connected to this place. I do miss my family and traditions from Afghanistan, but I am learning to blend those with Finnish customs to create a sense of home for myself and my family.
