Food waste in Finland is 400 million kilograms. The resources used in food consumption and production, such as land, nutrients, energy, and water, have a significant impact on the environment and the use of natural resources. Food production generates pollution that harms water bodies and soil, as well as greenhouse gas emissions. If food is not eaten, all these resources are wasted, and the emissions from the production chain are also wasted. (Kuluttajaliitto, 2024)

In Finland, households contribute 155 million kilograms, which is 38% of the total food waste. There is active work being done to reduce food waste in Finland, but the amounts still seem really large. The money wasted by consumers on these unnecessary purchases is also very significant.
