I belive strongly that education is playing a key part in sustainability transformation. I am a big advocate for education and equal opportunity, but if you would have asked me before my Internship in Zanzibar I might have answered differently. Being here for 1 month have shown me the power of education and how the lack thereof is harming the local ecocystems and the societies making them go backwards and nor forwards in sustainability.
The NGO that I work for here called Under the Wave made a survey last year with the local fishermen about their economic situation and how they see fishing as a profession. The fishermen all answered that they recognised that the fish population had decreased but did not know or understand why. Their answere were "maybe they went somewhere else", not understanding that over fishing and not respecting mating seasons of sertain species and catching breeding femails, will in the long term have a negative effect on the fish populations and ultimately the local fishermens livelihoods.
After seeing this first hand, I'm more than ever determined to fight for education and that is why I argue that education is the most important ingredient in sustainabilty transformation.
