I interviewed my good friend Mahsa, an immigrant from Iran who has been living in Finland for 9 years. She is currently a student at Laurea University of Applied Sciences (Laurea Ammattikorkeakoulu) and works as a waitress in a local restaurant. Her experiences highlight the challenges and successes of integrating into Finnish society.

Mahsa's first challenge was learning Finnish. She found the language difficult but took intensive courses and practiced diligently. While she can now communicate effectively, Finnish remains a demanding language for her. Studying at Laurea has given her additional opportunities to improve her language skills and integrate academically.

Culturally, Mahsa experienced a significant shift from Iran's vibrant, communal lifestyle to Finland's more reserved and individualistic culture. Initially, this led to feelings of isolation, but she gradually learned to appreciate the Finnish emphasis on personal boundaries and work-life balance.

Building a social network was one of Mahsa's biggest challenges. In Iran, friendships are formed easily, but in Finland, it takes time and effort. By joining community groups and participating in university activities, she gradually formed meaningful connections and friendships.

Working as a waitress in a local restaurant has been both challenging and rewarding for Mahsa. It provides her with an additional platform to practice Finnish and interact with a diverse set of people, further aiding her integration.

On the positive side, Mahsa admired the efficiency and fairness of Finnish public services, particularly healthcare and education. The Finnish education system, which emphasizes equality and comprehensive support, has been beneficial for her overall development.

When asked if she feels at home in Finland, Mahsa expressed mixed feelings. She appreciates the safety, high quality of life, and opportunities Finland offers but misses Iran's vibrant social life. Over time, she has blended elements of both cultures, creating a balanced and fulfilling life.

Based on Mahsa's experiences, several measures can effectively support immigrant integration.

(Offering accessible and comprehensive language courses is essential.)

(Providing sessions on local customs and available services can help immigrants adjust smoothly.)

( Encouraging participation in community activities can help build social networks.)

Integration affects an immigrant's identity, balancing the preservation of one's cultural heritage with embracing the new culture. For Mahsa, this means adapting to Finnish norms while maintaining a connection to her Iranian roots, enriching her identity and making her more resilient and adaptable.

Interviewing my friend Mahsa provided valuable insights into the immigrant experience in Finland. Her journey underscores the importance of language acquisition, cultural adaptation, and community engagement in successful integration. By supporting these aspects, societies can help immigrants build fulfilling lives and contribute positively to their new communities.
